The right product depends on what is actually on the hull. Salt residue, water spots, old wax, algae staining, oxidation, and scratches can all make gelcoat look tired, but they do not respond to the same product.

Before choosing a compound, wash the boat thoroughly with a marine-safe cleaner. Rinse well and dry the panel. If the surface still feels rough after washing, use a dedicated contaminant remover or clay-type decontamination process before polishing.
