A good metal polishing compound chart helps you match the level of cut to the job in front of you, so you are not trying to remove sanding lines with a coloring bar or chasing final gloss with something too aggressive. Compound colors are not fully standardized across every manufacturer, and the same colored  bar can behave differently depending on the formula, the manafacturer, the wheel you pair it with, the metal you are working, and how much pressure and RPM you use. So instead of treating a chart like a magic answer, use it as a starting point backed by technique.

How to read a metal polishing compound chart

Most polishing compounds fall into three working categories - cutting, intermediate polishing, and coloring. A metal polishing compound chart usually organizes them by aggressiveness, intended use, and compatible metal types. That is what actually matters on the shop floor.

Cutting compounds are built to remove sanding scratches, oxidation, pitting residue, and general surface damage faster. They leave a more refined surface than sanding, but they are not usually your last step. Intermediate compounds bridge the gap between initial cut and final finish. Coloring compounds are for gloss, clarity, and reflection once the surface is already properly prepared.

The biggest mistake is skipping surface prep and asking the bar to do too much. If the part still has deep 320-grit lines, no finishing compound is going to save you. It will only polish the tops of the scratches and leave you wondering why the shine looks cloudy in direct light. If your cut was not done properly, when you get to the final step, you will start to see your sanding marks/ pig tails left from not cutting properly, you need to go back to either your cut or intermediate bar and compound, at least for that section.

A practical metal polishing compound chart

Below is the plain-English version most people actually need.

Cutting bar - Either labelled as step 1 or step 2 depending on manufacture.  

These include bars such as: 439T, C94, 539R and more. I recommend not using brown " tripoli " bars, as in my opinion it is quite out dated, although many pros still swear by it and use it daily with great results.

 These bars cut fast, but it is not the bar for final appearance. Pair it with a firmer buffing wheel when stock removal matters more than gloss.

Cut and color bars- your intermediate or step 2. 

Bars such as: p14f, Q36, C106 and more. 

These bars start to add color and " gloss " while still allowing you to remove any left over sand scratches. It is crucial at this point that you have no sand scratches left before moving on to the final step.

Finishing Compound- your mirror finish process or step 3. 

Bars such as: CRX, M5, Competition purple and more. 

This is your last step. You pair these bars with a soft ( usually white ) pad and slow your rpm down to around 2200 RPM , use light pressure , rake often and always have lots of compound on your cloth. The Omniwave white with MX5 is my personal go to, I have never seen anything leave such minimal hash in all my years polishing. 

These 3 steps are often more than enough for an exceptional polish, although you can add up to five or more different steps during the process if you are looking to achieve a complete show shine. 

Match the compound to the metal, not just the color

On stainless steel, the challenge is different. Stainless is harder, slower to cut, and less forgiving when your setup is weak. A heavier-cut compound may be needed early, followed step 2 ( step 1 often on aluminum) compound to refine and brighten. If your wheel choice is too soft at the cutting stage, the work drags out and heat builds without enough correction. This is where you can use a sisal wheel ( the most aggressive wheel on the market ) 

Brass and copper usually polish quickly, but they can also over-color fast and show compound residue. A tripoli-type bar followed by a lighter coloring compound often works well. These metals do not need the same aggression as stainless, so using a harsh bar too long can create extra cleanup instead of better finish.

Wheel choice changes how the chart performs

A compound chart is only half the system. The buffing wheel changes the cut, heat, and finish almost as much as the bar itself.

A firmer wheel generally increases cut. That is useful when removing sanding lines, oxidation, and defects. A softer wheel supports final finishing and better color. If you put a coloring compound on a wheel loaded with old cutting residue, you are contaminating your final step before you even touch the part.

This is why experienced polishers keep separate wheels for separate compounds. One wheel per bar is not overkill. It is basic process control. If you want consistent, repeatable results, cross-contamination has to go.

Airway wheels are especially popular for aluminum and production polishing because they run cool and cut efficiently when matched correctly. Traditional sewn buffs are outdated and create " ghosting " or " tiger stripes ". Why compound charts sometimes fail people

The chart is not wrong. It is just incomplete without context.

If the part was poorly sanded, the bar has to fight scratches that should have been removed earlier. If the wheel is glazed, the compound stops cutting cleanly. If the bar is overloaded onto the wheel, the surface can streak and cake up. If the RPM is too high for the setup, heat rises and the finish gets muddy instead of clearer.

There is also the issue of expectation. A final-color compound does not create a mirror finish out of nowhere. It enhances the surface quality that already exists. The better your prep, the easier the final stage becomes.

A simple process for using the chart correctly

Start by identifying the metal and the current condition. Is it raw aluminum with 600-grit sanding lines, lightly oxidized stainless, or a nearly finished surface that just needs more pop? That tells you whether you need cut, refinement, or color.

Then choose the compound family that matches that stage, and pair it with the right wheel. Use enough pressure to engage the bar and the wheel, but not so much that you create excess heat or compound buildup. Clean the wheel regularly with a rake so fresh abrasive can work.

Most importantly, inspect under good lighting between stages. If sanding marks are still visible after your cutting step, do not move on just because the surface looks shiny from one angle. A mirror finish is built on honesty between steps. 

Always clean your metal in between steps with a solvent such as gunwash, varsol, mineral spirits or paint thinner with a clean microfiber rage. This will also help reveal sand scratches that are otherwise invisible. 

When one-step polishing makes sense, and when it does not

There are jobs where a one-step compound can be the right call. If the metal is already in decent shape and you need a strong cosmetic improvement fast, a versatile polishing bar can save time. This is common in maintenance polishing, touch-ups, and parts that do not need absolute show-level clarity.

But if the goal is a true, high-definition mirror finish, especially on aluminum or stainless, one-step polishing is usually a compromise. You may get shine, but not the depth, sharpness, or consistency most pros are after. There is no shame in a two-step or three-step process if the finish demands it. That is not overcomplicating the job. That is matching the process to the result.
