A bar of compound can look simple until it leaves deep haze on a nearly finished tank, loads a wheel in seconds, or refuses to remove the sanding lines you can plainly see. This polishing compound color guide gives colors their proper place: as a useful starting point, not a universal law. The label, abrasive type, wheel, metal, surface condition, and your technique decide the result.
Compound colors are industry shorthand. They can help you organize a polishing process quickly, but different manufacturers may use the same color for different jobs. A green bar from one supplier may be a fast-cut stainless compound; another may be a finer finishing bar. Buy by the compound's stated purpose first, then use its color to keep your bench organized and your steps repeatable.
What compound colors actually tell you
Most solid polishing compounds combine an abrasive with a wax or grease binder. The abrasive does the cutting. The binder carries it to the wheel and helps it spread across the workpiece. Color generally identifies a product family or intended stage, such as cut, color, or final finish. It does not tell you the exact grit size, the best wheel, or whether it will work on every metal.
That distinction matters because polishing is a controlled scratch-refinement process. A black or brown cutting compound may level oxidation, sanding scratches, and rough machining marks quickly. A white or blue compound may brighten the surface after that. A green finishing compound may produce exceptional clarity on stainless, but it cannot erase 320-grit sanding lines as efficiently as a true cutting compound.
Think of color as the label on a drawer, not the full instruction manual. The product description and the metal in front of you still matter.
Polishing compound color guide: common color families
The following color families are common across metal polishing, but they are not standardized across every brand. Always confirm the compound's intended metal and cut level before putting it on a wheel.
Black and brown compounds: cutting work
Black and brown compounds are often used for aggressive cutting, particularly on steel, iron, aluminum, and heavily weathered surfaces. They are common early-stage choices when you need to remove oxidation, scratches, pitting around a repair, or sanding marks left from coarse abrasives.
These compounds belong on a firm wheel and a surface that has been sanded properly. They are not magic bars for neglected metal. If deep scratches remain after polishing, the usual problem is not that you need more pressure. It is that you skipped sanding grits or started polishing before the previous scratch pattern was fully removed.
Cutting compounds can leave a gray cast or fine haze. That is normal. Their job is correction, not a final mirror.
Gray and emery compounds: heavy stock removal
Gray compounds, including emery-based bars, are generally for the roughest work. Use them when a part has scale, severe corrosion, weld discoloration, heavy scratches, or rough casting texture. They remove material fast, which makes them useful and easy to misuse.
Do not take a heavy-cut compound straight to a loose finishing wheel and expect control. A firmer treated, spiral-sewn, or cutting-oriented airway wheel provides better support. Keep the wheel moving, work a manageable area, and inspect often. Heat can distort thin material, smear softer metals, and make the next sanding step harder than it should be.
White compounds: versatile brightening
White compound is often a flexible middle or finishing option. Depending on its formula, it may brighten aluminum, stainless, chrome, brass, and other nonferrous metals after cutting. It is popular because it can clean up haze without being as aggressive as black, brown, or gray bars.
The trade-off is speed. On a properly prepared surface, white can move quickly toward a bright finish. On deeply scratched metal, it may seem ineffective because it is being asked to do a cutting compound's job. Pair it with a medium-density wheel for a blend of correction and brightness, then switch to a dedicated finishing wheel when clarity becomes the goal.
Green compounds: stainless and high-luster finishing
Green compounds are widely associated with stainless steel and high-luster finishing. Many use chromium oxide abrasives that can create a sharp, reflective finish after the heavier scratch pattern has already been refined.
Green is often where polishers get impatient. If it is leaving a cloudy finish, loading the wheel, or only shining the high spots, back up and inspect the surface under good light. The earlier sanding or cutting stage may not be complete. A finishing compound reveals remaining defects very efficiently.
Use a clean, softer finishing wheel and apply compound sparingly. More bar does not mean more shine. It often means more residue and less cutting action.
Blue, red, and pink compounds: final color and clarity
Blue, red, and pink compounds are commonly positioned as finer finishing or coloring compounds. They can be excellent for bringing up clarity on aluminum, brass, copper, chrome, stainless, and coated surfaces when the manufacturer approves that use.
These bars are for the last stretch, not the rescue mission. A soft airway wheel, loose buff, or dedicated finishing wheel lets the compound refine the smallest remaining marks. Keep the work clean between stages. One bit of coarse compound transferred from a cutting wheel can put scratches back into a finish that was almost done.
Match the compound to the job, not just the color
Start by judging the actual surface. A dull but smooth aluminum fuel tank needs a different approach than stainless with 400-grit sanding marks or a truck wheel with embedded road film. The correct progression depends on the deepest defect you are willing to remove.
For serious correction, sand in a consistent progression before buffing. Each grit should remove the scratch pattern from the grit before it. If you stop at a coarse grit, no finishing bar will turn those scratches into a clean mirror. It will only make them shinier and easier to see.
Then assign one wheel to each compound stage. Do not use the same wheel for black cut and green finish just because it looks clean. Wheels hold abrasive. Cross-contamination is one of the fastest ways to create random scratches and haze. Mark your wheels by compound color or stage, and rake them regularly to remove packed residue and expose fresh material.

Wheel choice changes what the color can do
A compound is only half of the system. A firm wheel makes a cutting compound more effective because it supports the abrasive against the metal. A softer, more open wheel gives a finishing compound room to produce color and clarity without cutting too deeply.
For an early cut, choose a wheel built for correction and controlled pressure. For intermediate brightening, move to a medium wheel that can refine the previous stage without being overly soft. For final color, use a dedicated soft finishing wheel. Airway wheels are especially useful when you need cooler operation and less compound buildup, but the density and construction still need to match the stage.
RPM matters too. A wheel run too slowly can feel lazy and encourage excess pressure. A wheel run beyond its rated speed is unsafe. Follow the wheel's RPM rating, wear appropriate eye and face protection, and keep loose clothing away from rotating equipment. A mirror finish is not worth a shortcut around basic shop safety.
When the finish looks wrong
A few symptoms point to predictable causes. Gray haze after a finishing pass usually means the surface needs more refinement before that stage, the wheel is contaminated, or the compound is too aggressive. Black streaks often mean too much compound, excessive heat, or a wheel that needs raking. Fine random scratches are usually contamination from a prior stage or dirty work handling.
If the metal looks bright but wavy, the issue may be surface leveling rather than compound choice. Buffing follows the surface. It can improve reflectivity, but it cannot fully correct deep dents, orange peel, or uneven sanding. Step back to the preparation stage when the defects demand it.
The best polishing setup is not the one with the most colors on the shelf. It is the one that gives you a clean, repeatable progression from the defect you have to the finish you want. Start with the surface, use color as a guide, keep every wheel dedicated, and let each stage earn the next one.
