If you jump from a rough sanding scratch straight to a buffing wheel, the wheel is not going to save you. That is the hard truth behind what grit before metal polishing really means. Polishing does not erase bad prep - it refines good prep. If the surface still carries deep sanding lines, pits, oxidation, or waviness, those flaws will show up louder once the shine arrives.
For most metal polishing jobs, the grit before polishing is not one fixed number. It depends on the metal, the condition of the surface, and the finish you want. If you are chasing a true mirror finish, you usually want to stop sanding somewhere between 600 and 800 grit before moving to compounds and buffing wheels. If the part is badly scratched or heavily oxidized, you may need to start much coarser and work through a full sequence to get there.
What grit before metal polishing depends on
The wrong way to think about sanding is to ask for one magic grit. The right way is to ask what the polishing stage needs from the sanding stage.
A buffing wheel and compound are designed to remove fine lines and refine the surface, not bulldoze through deep scratch patterns. If your last abrasive step leaves scratches that are too coarse, polishing takes forever and often never fully cleans them up. If you sand too fine before polishing, you can still get a great finish, but you may spend more time than necessary in prep. There is a balance.
For many aluminum and stainless jobs, 600 grit is a common minimum before cutting compounds. The key is not memorizing one exact sequence. The key is making sure each grit fully removes the scratch pattern from the previous grit before you move on. If 320 grit scratches are still hiding in the surface when you switch to 600, they will still be there when you start buffing. They may just be shinier and more annoying.
Changing sanding direction slightly between grits helps you spot leftover lines. Good lighting matters too. A lot of scratch patterns that seem gone in flat shop light come back the second the wheel hits them.
Metal type changes the answer
Different metals do not respond the same way, so what grit before metal polishing can shift depending on the job.
Aluminum is relatively soft and polishes quickly, but it also shows waviness and deep random scratches fast. Many aluminum polishers like to finish at 600 or 800 grit before buffing for a more controlled result.
Stainless steel is harder and more stubborn. It often benefits from a disciplined sanding sequence because the wheel and compound will not erase coarse scratches as easily. Finishing at 600 grit before polishing is common, and 800 can be worthwhile on show-level work.

If you want a bright, serviceable shine on a work truck tank or shop component, stopping at 600 grit before polishing may be perfectly reasonable. If you want deep reflection on a show part, 800 grit prep is usually safer.
There is always a trade-off between speed and perfection. Coarser prep can move faster if your buffing system has enough cut, but it raises the risk of seeing ghost scratches later. Finer prep takes longer upfront, but the polishing stage usually becomes easier and cleaner.

Why polishing fails after the right grit
Sometimes people do finish at 600 or 800 grit and still struggle. Usually the problem is not the number on the abrasive. It is the consistency of the scratch pattern.
Uneven pressure, missed areas, loaded abrasives, dirty work pieces, and random deep scratches from contamination can all sabotage the result. So can poor wheel maintenance or the wrong compound pairing. If your wheel is glazed, dirty, or overloaded, it will not cut the way it should. If your polishing stage is too aggressive, you can even put fresh marks into a nicely sanded surface.
This is also where technique matters. Too much pressure creates heat and drag. Too little pressure can make the process slow and inconsistent. Good polishing is not magic. It is controlled abrasion all the way through.
How to know you are ready to polish
Before you move from sanding to buffing, look for one thing: a uniform scratch pattern across the entire surface. Not a mostly uniform pattern. Not one that looks okay from one angle. Uniform means every previous scratch has been removed and the current grit has reached all areas.
Run clean, bright light across the part at a low angle. Rotate it. If deeper lines jump out, stay with the current grit or back up one step if needed. The polishing stage should feel like refinement, not rescue.
